Unique Toppings to Try with Your Pizza Dough Recipe

If you’re like many pizza lovers, you know that the magic of a great pizza lies not just in the crust but in the toppings you choose. While the classic pepperoni and cheese will always have a special place in our hearts, exploring unique toppings can elevate your pizza night to a whole new level. And it all starts with a solid pizza dough recipe. Let’s dive into some innovative toppings that can transform your homemade pizza and impress your friends and family.

1. Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese

For a sophisticated twist, try topping your pizza with smoked salmon and dollops of cream cheese. After baking your pizza dough recipe to a perfect crisp, add thin slices of smoked salmon and a sprinkle of capers. Finish with a few dollops of cream cheese for a pizza that’s reminiscent of a bagel but with a gourmet edge.

2. Fig and Prosciutto

If you’re craving a sweet and savory combination, figs and prosciutto are the way to go. Fresh figs or fig jam spread over your baked pizza dough recipe can offer a delightful sweetness, while thin slices of prosciutto add a salty, rich flavor. A sprinkle of arugula on top can add a touch of peppery freshness to complete the dish.

3. Truffle Oil and Wild Mushrooms

Elevate your pizza with the earthy richness of wild mushrooms and a drizzle of truffle oil. A blend of exotic mushrooms—like shiitake, oyster, and porcini—sautéed before topping your pizza dough recipe can bring an umami-packed punch. A few drops of truffle oil just before serving will add an indulgent aroma and flavor that makes every bite memorable.

4. Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese

For those who enjoy a bit of heat, buffalo chicken is an exciting choice. Shredded chicken tossed in buffalo sauce can bring a spicy kick to your pizza. Complement this with crumbles of blue cheese for a tangy contrast. The combination of these flavors on your pizza dough recipe will make it a new favorite for spicy food enthusiasts.

5. Caramelized Onions and Goat Cheese

Caramelized onions add a sweet, deep flavor that pairs beautifully with the tanginess of goat cheese. Spread a layer of caramelized onions over your pizza dough recipe, then add dollops of goat cheese before baking. The result is a sophisticated and flavorful topping that is sure to impress.

6. Pears and Gorgonzola

For a fresh and bold flavor profile, try pairing sliced pears with Gorgonzola cheese. The natural sweetness of the pears contrasts wonderfully with the strong, creamy Gorgonzola. This unique topping combination on your pizza dough recipe creates a delightful balance that’s both elegant and satisfying.

7. Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Artichoke Hearts

Sun-dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts offer a Mediterranean flair to your pizza. Their intense flavors and textures make them perfect partners on a pizza. Spread them over your prepared pizza dough recipe for a topping that’s brimming with taste and vibrancy.

8. BBQ Pulled Pork and Cilantro

For a BBQ twist, pulled pork topped with BBQ sauce is a surefire winner. After baking your pizza dough recipe, pile on the pulled pork and a sprinkle of fresh cilantro. This combination delivers a smoky, tangy flavor that’s perfect for those who enjoy a hearty, satisfying meal.

9. Egg and Bacon Breakfast Pizza

Why not enjoy breakfast pizza any time of the day? Top your pizza dough recipe with crispy bacon and a cracked egg. Bake until the egg is set, and you’ll have a delightful breakfast-for-dinner option that’s sure to please.

10. Beet and Goat Cheese

For a colorful and health-conscious topping, try roasted beets and goat cheese. The earthy sweetness of beets combined with the creamy tang of goat cheese creates a visually stunning and delicious pizza topping that’s perfect for impressing guests.

Experimenting with these unique toppings can turn a simple pizza dough recipe into a gourmet creation. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or just looking to spice up your weekly pizza night, these toppings will offer a fresh take on your traditional pizza experience. So roll out your pizza dough recipe, get creative, and enjoy the delicious results!

Sourdough Starter

A Sourdough starter takes around 7 days to prepare. First you create the starter with whole wheat flour to boost the fermentation process. After this, you’ll continue to feed the starter with regular all purpose flour.

Ingredients (day 1-2)

Whole Wheat Flour

70 gm

Water

70 gm

Ingredients (day 3-7)

All Purpose Bread Flour

70 gm

Water

70 gm

Method

Day 1-2

Peapare the Starter

Add 70 gm of whole wheat flour and 70 gm of luke-warm water to a container or jar and mix well with a fork until the mixture is smooth.

Cover you container or jar with a lid or plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for 48 hours.

Day 3

Feed the starter

By now, your starter probably has a darker liquid type layer on the top of it (like water or oil).

Remove half of your starter using a spoon (approx. 70 gm) starting with the liquid/oil type layer on the top, then continue removing more until you've removed approx 70 gm.

Now add replenish your starter with 70gm of all-purpose flour and 70 gm of water. Mix with a fork until smooth. The texture should look like a thich batter (the same consistency as when you first mixed your starter).

Day 4-7

Continue Feeding the starter

For each day, you want to repeat the feeding process on day 3, ie. Remove half of your starter using a spoon and replenish your starter with 70gm of all-purpose flour and 70 gm of water. Mix with a fork until smooth.

Continue this for another 3 days.

As the yeast begins to develop, your starter will rise, and bubbles will form on the surface. When the starter drops, it’s time to feed it again.
